California Beer Festival is this Saturday in San Dimas, CA. This should be a great event in a new location.  Last year was a bit cramped so it is a natural progression to get to a new location where you can have some elbow room!  (And maybe pass out on the grass instead of the hard concrete of the downtown Claremont streets) Look for some of our favorites including Black Market Brewing, Kat Daddy and also Claremaont Craft Ales.

On September 8th, 2012 the OC Brew Ha Ha http://ocbrewfest.com/ held its 3rd annual event. This year marked a new location at the Oak Canyon Park adjacent to Irvine Lake in Southern California. This is a fantastic event for a great cause, the Fallen Firefighter Relief Fund.  Every year this event gets bigger and bigger. This year saw over 3000 beer lovers come through the gates to help celebrate with Great Beer, Food and Music.

The day started out at 12 PM for those with VIP tickets.  This is really the way to go if you want to hit your favorites without having to stand in line for too long!  It also helps ensure you get any “special” releases before they run dry!  Several brewers were Tapped Out before the end of the event and many late comers were literally left in line holding empty glasses!  As we entered the new location, I noticed it seemed very open and well laid out.  The one thing that might have been better would be the signage for breweries or a map of them to help the day’s logistics. With 75 breweries present, it made it very difficult to hit everyone to see what was new and happening!  To be able to target specific ones early one would be priceless! Other than that, I think the new location is great!

As I mentioned, there were 75 breweries on site.  (See below for the link to the entire list of breweries)  Pouring over 175 brews, it is near impossible to get to everything between two guys and a camera, within four hours.  (But boy do we try!) This also does not give us time to listen to the guest speakers either.  I think this really needs a four man, full court operation to get to everything! That being said, there were some new breweries in addition to long time favorites!  Most of the pouring was done by volunteers from the firefighter association!  This year there seemed to be a few less than years past.  I also appreciated that most of the brewery reps were in the booth as well to help answer questions!

Of the new comers, some of our favorites included I & I Brewing Company, http://iandibrewing.com/ , Ritual Brewing http://ritualbrewing.com/ and also Golden Road Brewing. http://goldenroad.la/   I & I has been in business for almost 1 year!  They actually specialize in Small Batches which allow them to offer a huge variety out of their tasting room in Chino, CA (Last I checked they had 14 live tap handles!). My favorite from them is the Session IPA.  It has a good amount of hops but the ABV is less than 5%!  Ritual in Redlands, CA , which we be opening shortly, is hitting the ground running with a brewery that will rival Hangar 24 with respect to overall capacity. According to Steve at Ritual, they are going to really work on some special releases.  The Red I tasted was fantastic, which is a good indicator they will be very successful! Golden Road located in Atwater Village founded also last year, with a focus on delivering via can’s. (No doubt due to one of the founders history with Oskar Blues!) have some great beers that the release year round as well as limited releases. They also have a great onsite pub at the brewery as well!

Some of the breweries from the past events that we stopped by included Maui Brewing http://www.mauibrewingco.com/ , Craft Brewing http://craftbrewingcompany.com/ and also Sierra Nevada http://www.sierranevada.com/   . From Maui, we were informed that there will be a collaboration beer happening with Dogfish Head in the coming months that will be featuring Breadfruit which sounds amazing! . At Craft, Kurt was serving up a special mix of the Raspberry Wheat and Stout creating a sort of Chocolate Raspberry Truffle (AMAZING!) and Sierra Nevada not only were pouring one of my favorite seasonals Tumbler, but also at 3 PM pulled out the BIG Guns with a session of Bigfoot!  I ended the day with some beers being poured by BRU grill http://www.brugrill.com/  that included Dogfish Head Punk which is one of the best Pumpkin beers which they have been doing since 1994 and one of the breweries first beers!

In the food department, there was the awesome traveling fire truck pizza unit known as Company 77. http://www.company77.com/   I always look forward to the amazing Pesto pizza they put out.  In addition, Stone Catering  http://www.stoneworldbistro.com/ was onsite, Bru Grill  and several other food trucks serving up great stuff.  And for dessert… what is a better pairing with Great Beers than Brew Cakes. http://www.facebook.com/thebrewcakes    This amazing creation uses locally sourced beer to concoct some wonderful  cakes and cupcakes.

The OC Brew Ha Ha continues to be one of the premier events in Southern California.  With their ever expanding number of breweries and food vendors, it will no doubt continue to grow and flourish!  A big congratulations goes out to everyone on the team including Ed, Tiffany and Cameron for a job well done.  We hope to expand our coverage a bit next year for better, comprehensive insight.  We are already preparing for next year’s event, Cheers!  El Hefe

Here is the entire list of breweries this year. http://ocbrewfest.com/breweries-2/

This year’s OC BrewHAHA will be happening on September 8th.

As they enter their 3rd Year, OC Brew HAHA has become one of the premier events for beer lovers! This year will be in a new location, but will be the same  great event!  The proceeds for this event supports the Orange County Fire Authority Fallen Firefighters Fund

This year there will be 70 breweries, Tons of  foodtrucks and also Live music.

Get VIP access for the price of General admission by using the promo code OBBVIP.  http://ocbrewfest.eventbrite.com/?discount=obbvip  This is a must since this event get’s packed!  Just see some of our pics from last year!  There were literally 50 people in line just for Hangar 24!

Look forward to a great event, as always

On Sunday, August 12, 2012, Blue Palms Brewhouse celebrated its fourth year of operation. Blue Palms, located in the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood,  CA features craft beer and a nice selection of menu items that pair well with beer.

Blue Palms’ fourth year was filled with anxiety due to problems with the sub-lease on their property. Earlier this year, they were forced to vacate the premises while searching for a solution. The craft beer community rallied behind the owner, Brian Lenzo, during those hard times. It took months for Brian to negotiate a new lease, and reopen the restaurant.

The celebration on Sunday included over 60 beers, which were available in the beer garden and inside the restaurant. Most of the kegs were collected during roads trips to San Francisco and San Diego during the beginning of the week. Marinated tri tip was grilled for sandwiches that were available for lunch. Specialty beers were released throughout the afternoon, including Dogfish Head 120, Southern Tier Crème Brulee Stout, Alpine Nelson, Firestone Lil Opal (barrel aged for 3 years), and Stone 16th Anniversary. And, Greg Koch was on hand to debut the release of the Stone 16th Anniversary beer. Brian also subjected himself to a dunk tank as a fund raiser for the Hollywood YMCA. Early in the afternoon Space Kyle and the Newtonians entertained the crowd with Jazz. In the late afternoon, DJ Chuck got the crowd dancing with a variety of music.

On Thursday, July 19th 2012, Total Wine & More in Brea, CA was the host of a very special Firestone Walker Brewing event.  There were some great Beers, good Pizza and a nice group of folks in attendance.  It was a very well-received event which most likely is attributed to the host for the evening, Cofounder – David Walker!  In addition, Jason from Firestone and Daphne from Total Wine was in attendance helping with the logistics and pouring.

The event was held in the Total Wine classroom off to the side for the store. The cost of the even was 15 dollars which covered the cost of the beer, glass and pizza that was brought in for the evening.  There were approximately 15 people in attendance. Two of which were Pat C and her husband Richard.  (Pat, as you know, does a good bit of writing for this Blog as well)   There was a great range of knowledge levels within the group which made for some great sharing and interaction between David and the rest of the attendees.

I have personally been drinking Firestone Walker beer since their inception in 1996 when they were operating out of the Firestone Winery in Santa Ynez, CA! (I actually brought up to David Walker “Windsor Ale” which was the 2nd beer they released as a company but later retired in favor of the Pale 31!) They have obviously come a long way since those days, but the thing has not changed; their commitment to putting our excellent beer! This has been further confirmed by the industry at large with the amount of awards and accolades they continue to collect every year!

David is a fantastic host and beer ambassador.  He makes it a point to come to events and sessions like these to not only promote the Firestone product, but Craft brewing in general.  He has an impressive depth of knowledge that was great to experience first-hand.  Firestone Walker Brewing and David himself both earn high marks for the work they do in this area.

The event started at 5:30 and unfortunately ended at 6:30. I think it was a bit too short and should have been more like 1:30 to 2 hours long.  It seemed a bit rushed towards the end but I understand that David is pretty busy and any time spent listening to him is always valued!

The lineup for the evening included Double Barrel Ale (DBA), Pale 31 , Union Jack, Double Jack, Wookey Jack, Solace and then ending with Walker’s Reserve.   (Unfortunately no surprise beers we brought for example, Double DBA)  All of the beers were poured into Firestone Logo’s glasses that we were able to keep.  Many of the beers have some amount of Barrel ageing that leads to a great uniqueness to the taste. David was great at explaining not only what goes into making these beers but also the origin and history of the classic examples these beers try to follow.  I can’t even do this justice by trying to repeat all of the amazing facts and figures that he covered in a short amount of time…  Needless to say David knows his stuff!

Thank You to Total Wine and More, Firestone Walker Brewing, and especially David Walker for this great event. I look forward to a Paso Robles trip and some in depth analysis of their lineup (Especially the beers that don’t leave the tasting room!)  in the near future.

Here are a few pics myself and Pat took during the event.

When Firestone Walker announced they were planning the first Invitational Beer Fest, there was a lot of interest in the craft beer community. The festival at the Paso Robles fairgrounds would have 40 breweries and more than 20 restaurants. Presale tickets sold out in a few hours and the event sold out 2 months in advance. The hashtag #FWIBF was frequently seen on Twitter in the week leading up to Saturday, June 9, 2012. There was a lot of excitement about this event.

The day of the festival was sunny and clear and people started to arrive before the 1pm start time. As you entered the fairgrounds, volunteers distributed a plate, with a slot to hold the event glass and a small book listing the breweries and beers. While waiting to enter, people stood in the shade and talked about which brewery to visit first. There were breweries from across the United States representing California, Oregon and Colorado in the west, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Nebraska in the Midwest, and Delaware and New York on the east coast. There was an international presence with Mikkeller from Denmark and Yo Ho from Japan. A lot of great beers and breweries to choose from!

When the gates opened, craft beer fans spread across the fairgrounds. Lines formed quickly at Three Floyds for Dark Lord with vanilla beans and at Alpine, Russian River and The Bruery. The lines moved quickly and food tents located between the beer tents made it less crowded. Some highlights of the day for me were Bell’s Wild One, a sour fermented in wood barrels and blended, Odells’s Friek, a framboise-style oak aged sour, Dogfish Head’s Two Blind Myces, a farmhouse saison with cardamom and orange peel fermented and aged in red wine barrels with Brett, Alesmith‘s Brewer’s Blend Barrel Aged Speedway Stout, and Hollister Brewing’s Tiny Bubbles, a tart wheat beer flavored with coriander and sea salt.

It was great to see the brewers pouring and talking about their beer. It was clear they love what they do!  There were rare and hard to find beers, and award winning beers and breweries. Several breweries poured special bottles or kegs during the day. There was something for everyone – barrel aged and dark beers from Alesmith, Ballast Point, FiftyFifty, The Bruery, and TAPS. There were fruity beers and lighter beers from Boneyard, Moonlight, Green Flash, Trumer, and Sun King. Hopheads could choose from a number of IPAs and hoppy beers from Alpine, Beachwood BBQ, Lagunitas, Kern River, Stone, and Founders.  This is just a small glimpse of the craft breweries that poured all afternoon. You can see a list of the breweries here.

Central coast restaurants served an outstanding variety of food. Whiling enjoying beer, you could sample flatbread pizza, bacon wrapped stuffed jalapeños, paella, BBQ pork sliders, cheese plates, spicy mac and cheese, ribs, tacos and more. No one went hungry at this event!

If you needed a break from great beer and food, you could attend the  Behind the Beer sessions sponsored by Taphunter and The Brewing Network. These sessions featured brewers who answered questions about brewing and their beer. There was also a presentation by Sarah Forstner representing Save the Cocks, an organization that works to rescue and place abandoned roosters in Paso Robles and the surrounding area. Several groups provided live music in an area adjacent to the beer and food tents. Throughout the day, attendees could vote for their favorite brewery using a mobile app Craftbeercrawl.com from Taphunter.  At the end of the Behind the Beer sessions, Mel Gordon from Taphunter announced Three Floyds as the winner of the People’s Choice award.

More than 2000 attended this inaugural event with proceeds benefiting Pioneer Day, a popular Paso Robles event since the 1930’s. Firestone Walker has definitely set the bar for future events.  They provided a relaxing setting to enjoy craft beer and food.  Craft beer lovers had the opportunity to meet the men and women who brew the beer. Cheers to the volunteers and everyone else who helped to make this event a success! We are already looking forward to next year.
